This song is haunting me since last Saturday. I could not resist posting the lyrics in my blog. It is written by Kaifi Azmi (not Gulzar, my first guess) and is from the film Kohra (not Khamoshi, yet another first guess).
Just to remind you, some other gems from Kaifi are - Chalte chalte (Paakezah), Hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaya hoga (Haqeeqat), Ya dil ki suno duniya walon (Anupama) and Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam (Kagaz ke phool).
Ye Nayan Dare Dare, Ye Jaam Bhare Bhare
Zara Peene Do
Kal Ki Kisko Khabar, Ik Raat Hoke Nidar
Mujhe Jeene Do
Ye Nayan Dare Dare…
Raat Haseen Ye Chand Haseen
Tu Sabse Haseen Mere Dilbar
Aur Tujhse Haseen, Aur Tujhse Haseen Tera Pyaar
Tu Jaane Na
Ye Nayan Dare Dare…
Pyaar Mein Hai Jeevan Ki Khushi
Deti Hai Khushi Kai Gam Bhi
Maein Maan Bhi Loon, Maein Maan Bhi Loon Kabhi Haar
Tu Maane Na
Ye Nayan Dare Dare…
I guess it is difficult to write a song more simpler and equally great ! Let me attempt an English translation of the lyrics:
These eyes timid, so timid, these wine glasses full, so full
Let me drink a little
Who knows what’s instore tommorow, one night with some courage
Let me live a little
These eyes timid, so timid…
Beautiful night, this beautiful moon
You are the most beautiful my love
And more beautiful than you, and more beautiful than you is your love
You don’t know
These eyes timid, so timid…
Love is the happiness of life
It give happiness and a lot of grief
I may accept, I may accept defeat at times
You never do
These eyes timid, so timid…
Hope I haven’t completely killed and buried the beauty of Kaifi’s poetry.

[In Hindi]
mausam ke saath khile kutch phool
darakth ki jadon pur lag chuki deemak
shaakh ko ya maaloom
talwaaron ne pehni shuarya ki dhaar
aadhi tankhwa pe bike senapati
sainikon ko kya maaloom
shraddha se jhukaya mandir may sir
laalach aur zeher is sana hua dil
duaon ko kya maaloom
jab hote hain wo bus unhe dekhte hain
aur phir unki yaad may tumhe dekhte hain
mehbooba ko kya maaloom
[English Translation]
Flowers of the season blossom
Termites feed on the roots of the tree
What do the branches know
Swords wear the steel of bravery
The general is sold for half his salary
What do the soldiers know
The head bows with faith in the temple
The heart is filled with greed and poison
What do the prayers know
When she is near all I see is her
And thinking of her all I see is you
What does my lover know

I see myself sleep, careless, blank.
I see that dream leaving me.
It took me to places I won’t remember.
I see my hand stretching out
trying to hold the dream back,
then it falls down to pull the sheet over.
I see the morning sun measuring my window.
Light slits my eyes,
entering me to enlighten me.
I see myself wake up.
And, then I go to sleep.
